The Positive Behaviour Management with Protection and Releases course combines the full Timian Positive Behaviour Management curriculum with practical personal safety skills.
BILD Act Certified and Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Approved, the programme equips staff with the knowledge, confidence and techniques needed to prevent escalation, understand behaviour that challenges and respond safely when physical contact occurs.
This course delivers the complete Timian Positive Behaviour Management theoretical curriculum alongside practical protection and release skills. Learners develop a deeper understanding of behaviour as communication, trauma-informed practice, de-escalation strategies and person-centred approaches that reduce the likelihood of incidents occurring.
Unlike full physical intervention programmes, this course focuses on lower-risk environments where staff may encounter grabbing or unwanted physical contact but do not require restraint techniques. Participants gain practical personal safety skills while maintaining a strong emphasis on prevention, dignity, respect and restrictive practice reduction.
*2 days face-to-face training, or hybrid delivery consisting of 1 classroom day plus pre-course e-learning.
**Face-to-face classroom delivery or hybrid learning. Interactive, practical and scenario-based throughout.
The programme is delivered over two days at your organisation's premises, or through a hybrid model that combines pre-course e-learning with one day of face-to-face delivery. Learning is highly interactive and incorporates classroom discussion, real-world case studies, scenario-based learning and practical exercises facilitated by Empeiria's Senior Timian Instructors.
Learners explore the five core chapters of the Timian Positive Behaviour Management curriculum, including building positive relationships, understanding behaviour as communication, trauma-informed practice, individual response strategies, restrictive practice reduction and ethical decision-making. Key frameworks such as the Graduated Hierarchy of Intervention, the Four D's framework, the SPACED Model and the Crisis Cycle are introduced and applied to practical workplace situations.
The course also includes the General Protection Skills module, where participants learn safe responses to clothing, wrist and hair grabs, fending off techniques and non-restrictive guides. Throughout the programme, learners develop a greater understanding of how communication, body language, posture, space and environmental factors can help prevent escalation and improve safety for everyone involved.
This course is designed for professionals working in lower-risk health, education and social care environments where physical intervention is not anticipated but staff may occasionally encounter grabbing or unwanted physical contact. It is particularly suitable for community-based services, schools, SEND settings, domiciliary care, housing support services, respite provision, outreach teams and voluntary sector organisations.
The programme is ideal for organisations seeking a certified Positive Behaviour Management course that combines behaviour support theory with practical personal safety skills, without introducing restraint or holding techniques.
