Understand Behaviour in a Meaningful Way
Empeiria Training partners with Timian Learning and Development to deliver Positive Behaviour Management (PBM) courses for organisations looking to strengthen practice and improve outcomes.
These courses focus on building positive relationships, promoting ethical approaches, and reducing potential risks. Through our collaboration with Timian, we tailor programmes to meet your organisation’s needs, with ongoing support to help ensure successful implementation.
We aim to ensure that everyone within your organisation can say: “In this place and with these people, I feel safe”
As a Timian Academy, Empeiria's instructors are authorised to deliver the same BILD Act Certified training as Timian directly, ensuring that every course meets the same national standards, regardless of whether it is delivered by Timian or through an approved Academy provider.
A Timian Academy is an organisation that has been approved by Timian Learning & Development to deliver the Timian curriculum using Senior Timian Instructors.
Empeiria's Senior Timian Instructors bring decades of combined experience in health, and social care. As a Timian Academy, we deliver nationally certified training with the added benefit of a local, flexible, and responsive service.
We take the time to understand your organisation before training begins, completing a Training Needs Analysis to ensure the content is right for your setting. Our training is practical, relevant, and grounded in real-world experience.
Is training delivered by Empeiria the same quality as training delivered directly by Timian?
Yes. As a Timian Academy, Empeiria is approved to deliver the Timian curriculum to the same standard as Timian itself.
All training is delivered using the approved curriculum by qualified Senior Timian Instructors, and the BILD Act Certified status of the training is the same regardless of whether it is delivered directly by Timian or through an approved Academy provider like Empeiria.
Infact, Empeiria and Timian can develop bespoke training programmes for organisations with unique needs. The five core chapters of the Timian curriculum form the foundation, and specific techniques or content can be tailored to your service area, setting, or the individuals you support.
Please get in touch to discuss what a bespoke programme might look like for your organisation.

Everything you need to know about Timian PBM training. From accreditation and course content to delivery options, eligibility, and compliance.
What is Positive Behaviour Management (PBM) training?
Positive Behaviour Management training equips staff with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand why people behave in certain ways and to respond effectively and safely.
Rather than focusing solely on managing behaviour in the moment, PBM takes a proactive, person-centred approach, helping staff build positive relationships, recognise early warning signs, and use de-escalation strategies before situations escalate.
Where physical intervention is necessary, it is used as a last resort, within a clear ethical and legal framework.
What is the Timian curriculum?
The Timian curriculum is a structured, five-chapter programme covering all aspects of positive behaviour management, from building relationships and understanding behaviour, through to individual response strategies, reducing restrictive practice, and ethics, law and standards.
For courses that include physical skills, additional modules covering protection techniques, physical interventions, and specialist skills are delivered on top of the five core chapters, based on a Training Needs Analysis.
How long has Timian been delivering this type of training?
Timian Learning & Development has been delivering positive behaviour management and challenging behaviour training for over 30 years, with more than 25 years of formal accreditation and certification against national standards.
What is the overall approach behind Timian training?
Timian's approach is built around understanding the underlying reasons behind behaviour that challenges, rather than simply managing it. The training is person-centred and trauma-informed, recognising that behaviour is a form of communication.
The goal is to help staff build safe, supportive environments where the risk of escalation is reduced and restrictive interventions are minimised. Dignity, respect, and empowerment are central to everything the curriculum covers.
Is Timian training suitable for my sector?
Yes. The Timian curriculum has been delivered across a wide range of sectors including supported living, residential care, NHS-commissioned services, mental health, learning disability and autism services, CAMHS, eating disorder units, A&E departments, primary and secondary schools, SEND settings, Multi-Academy Trusts, international schools, and respite services. The training is adaptable to the specific context and risk profile of your organisation.
What physical skills are covered in the training?
Physical skills are determined by a Training Needs Analysis and are only delivered after completion of the five core theoretical chapters.
The range of available modules includes General Protection Skills (responses to clothing, wrist and hair grabs; fending off; non-restrictive guides), Physical Interventions (standing, walking, and seated holds), Enhanced Skills (floor holds and self-harm prevention on the floor), Clinical Holding (patient transfer and holding in clinical settings), Eating Disorder Physical Interventions, and Elderly Care Physical Interventions.
Not all modules are included in every course, the physical skills delivered are matched to the specific needs and risk profile of your organisation.
How is Timian training delivered through Empeiria?
Empeiria is a Timian Academy with Senior Timian Instructors who deliver the full Timian curriculum directly to your organisation's workforce.
Training is available in several formats depending on the course: face-to-face classroom delivery at your organisation's premises, hybrid delivery combining e-learning with classroom time, and, for the Foundation Course, fully online self-paced e-learning.
The Train the Trainer programme is also available as an open course, with dates at venues across the UK throughout the year.
Can training be delivered at our premises?
Yes. All direct delivery courses, PBM with Physical Intervention, PBM with Protection and Releases, and PBM Foundation, are delivered as closed courses at your organisation's premises by Empeiria's Senior Timian Instructors.
This avoids disruption to your service, keeps travel costs low, and allows your team to learn together in a familiar environment.
What our happy clients said
Our staff who attended the Introduction to PBS and Understanding Behaviour Training said that Tom was in tune with the realities of frontline work.
His patient, calm, and non-judgmental approach helped staff feel listened to and supported, making the session easy to engage with.
All who attended the Introduction to PBS and Understanding Behaviour Training spoke positively about how Cath helped them understand situations from a parent’s perspective.
One example that resonated strongly was the discussion around a session being cut short due to dysregulation. Cath’s explanation helped staff see how this can feel for families, the disappointment, stress, and emotional impact, while still reinforcing the importance of safety, PBS-consistent responses, and clear communication.
Staff found this particularly helpful in shaping their responses to parents during and after incidents.
Staff also found the links between behaviour, health, and pain helpful, as well as the advice on working calmly and professionally with families.
The alignment between PBS, restrictive practices, and incident recording (including ABC analysis) was seen as clear and practical.
Overall, staff described the training as grounded, relevant, and confidence-building.
The trainer was fantastic and her delivery style was engaging and positive. One of the best and most informative, accessible courses I have attended. And I have attended many! Thank you.
The scenario-based discussions using our current profiles felt highly relevant, particularly around community-based dysregulation, transport challenges, and transitions such as school drop-offs and taxi rides.
Staff valued the practical focus on proactive planning within a PBS framework, alongside guidance on safe, least-restrictive responses around roads and vehicles.
