Assessing Complex and Forensic Risk in Social Care Settings
People with support needs in the UK are disproportionately represented within the Criminal Justice System.
The objective of this course is to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals who support people with complex needs who have been convicted of an offence or are deemed to be at risk of conviction.
The course explores issues around risk management including forensic risk management at the interface between support settings and the criminal justice system, where professionals are expected to work within the complex systems and processes which come into play when someone breaks the law.
Within this course there is a close examination of the sophisticated risk assessment tools and, through consultation, and as a bespoke feature of the course, the learners will be supported in applying tools to examples from their own practice.

Learners will explore the definition of risk.
Learners will discuss the nature of risk in everyday life, their unavoidable exposure to risk situations, and the informal nature of day-to-day risk assessments/management.
Learners Identify risks associated with harmful behaviours including the risk to self and the risk to others.
Learners will describe the differences between Static risk factors and Dynamic risk factors.
Learners will understand the principles of risk formulation.
Learners will discuss the sophisticated risk assessment tools used to develop Structured Professional Judgements.
Learners will be introduced to models of offending and how they help in the understanding of harmful behaviours, and contribute to the management of such behaviours.
Learners will have an opportunity to apply the principles of risk assessment and management to their own practice.
This course is for professionals who work with people with complex needs that have been convicted of an offence or are deemed to be at risk of conviction and want to enhance their skills and knowledge for supporting them.
