For staff working across the health and social care sector the work they do can often be difficult to process. Often working compassionately alongside people who have experienced traumatic events can be a challenge.
This course is an evidence-based approach to aide direct staff who support people that may have experienced psychological trauma or adversity and ensure that services and day to day support is delivered in a way that minimises re-traumatisation. The course also incorporates how to support disclosures of abuse and active listening skills.There is a significant requirement for us to build the resilience of the workforce to be enhance their skills and understanding in this area. There is growing evidence based that shows us that have a more trauma informed workforce increases staff retention and provides employees with greater job satisfaction.
This full day course is broken down in to two sessions. Session one focuses on Gaining a better understanding of trauma, how we can recognise if someone has experienced trauma, the effects it has and what happens to the brain when trauma occurs.
Session two concentrates trauma informed ways of working that will benefit organisations and individuals in being able to provide a trauma informed approach across all aspects of the services they provide.
This also explores minimising of traumatisation and staff skills to enhance staff resilience and recognition of their own stressors to be able to work effectively with people who have experienced trauma whilst minimising the impact on the workforce's mental health.
Understand what is meant by "trauma" and the difference between acute trauma and complex trauma
Learn about adverse childhood experiences and how they may effect someone later in life.
Explore organisational frameworks such as the 4 R's and 6 guiding principles or trauma informed practice
Develop trauma-informed communication skills and how to set appropriate professional boundaries.

It is particularly relevant for staff who are involved in delivering day‑to‑day services where risk of re‑traumatisation may be high, or where disclosures of abuse need to be handled with skill, sensitivity, and compassion.
By completing this training, you and your team will be better equipped to recognise the impact of trauma, including how it affects behaviour, brain functioning, and emotional wellbeing, and respond in ways that promote safety, minimise re‑traumatisation, and build resilience both in those you support and among yourselves.
